Norfolk Southern
Originally that railroad where coal was ALWAYS king, Norfolk Southern is the product of the merger between the Norfolk and Western RR and the Southern RR, and existed mainly in Southeastern United States as well as a few lines in the Northeast. After acquiring 52% or Conrail in 1999, mainly Conrail's former Pennsylvania Railroad Lines, Norfolk Southern built up its intermodal business, and now NS and its Thoroughbred operating policy have now made it the most profitable and growing Class I railroad in the country.

CSX
The product of the mergers of the B&O and many others, CSX joined Norfolk Southern as a RR heavy on coal and merchandise traffic, most of that radiating out of the Appalachian Mountains and extending throughout the Eastern United States. CSX acquired 42% of Conrail in 1999, which mainly consisted of Conrail's former New York Central lines, essentially the NYC Portion of the "Conrail X". This includes the traffic-heavy Albany-Great Lakes Division in the Northeast, which extends west from the port of Boston, north from New Jersey, and west all the way to Chicago. Although still recovering from the Big Blue acquisition and the poor condition of much of its physical plant, CSX and its yellow nose provide some of the best routes to railfan in the east.
